You’ll practise real-life communication skills through interactive activities, helping you respond more naturally and keep conversations flowing.
Classes focus on the sounds, rhythm and tone of spoken English, supporting you to communicate more naturally and be better understood. You’ll also explore how meaning is shaped through body language, tone and interaction.
Through role-play, listening activities and conversation strategies, you’ll build the skills to engage confidently in both social and workplace contexts.

During the course, participants will be guided through key concepts, techniques and approaches that typically include:
Speaking and listening skills:
- Practising real-life conversations using Australian English
- Listening activities to improve understanding and response
- Building fluency through guided speaking practice
Pronunciation and delivery:
- English vowel and consonant sounds
- Improving clarity and pronunciation
- Understanding syllables, word stress and sentence stress
- Using rhythm, intonation and linking in natural speech
Communication strategies:
- Conversation techniques and strategies
- Using idioms, phrases and everyday expressions
- Managing conversations and responding confidently
- Discussing everyday and topical issues

Pre-requisite
To enrol in this course, it is recommended that you:
- Have completed our Beginner English and Pre-Intermediate English course or have equivalent knowledge
- Feel comfortable using English in basic everyday conversations

Course materials
What to bring to class
- All learning materials and resources will be provided by your tutor. No textbook is required for this course.
You may wish to bring:
- A notebook and pen
- An English dictionary (if you would like to purchase a dictionary, your tutor can recommend a suitable option during the first class)
- An A4 folder for storing worksheets
Certificate of completion
Students who attend at least 80% of the course will receive a Certificate of Attendance from Sydney Community College.
This certificate recognises your commitment to improving your English language skills and can support your personal or professional development.
