Course description

Learn Indonesian in Sydney with this beginner’s course.

Whether you want to learn Indonesian language for business, travel or just for fun, you’ll learn the basics at this informal, practical and interactive course in the Sydney CBD.

“Bahasa Indonesia” means language of Indonesia and it unifies a country with many different languages and dialects. This Level 1 course will teach you how to communicate in Indonesian with simple vocabulary and basic sentences.

This course is suitable for:
Students with no previous learning in Indonesian

Learning objectives

By the end of this Indonesian Beginners Class, you will have learned how to:

  • greet people and farewell them appropriately
  • describe yourself and others (age, nationality, gender, family members, daily routines, physical traits and personality, etc)
  • tell the time
  • express some likes and dislikes, especially in relation to food
  • invite others and accept/decline invitations
  • ask simple questions (to find out who, what, where, how many, what time, etc)
  • order food and drinks
  • make simple arrangements
  • identify some common transport, food, places, family members, animals and animal noises/actions
  • talk about actions in the past and present
  • recognise and use numbers up to 1 million
  • follow some directions to do physical actions
  • begin to understand how affixes work in the language
  • begin to master common colloquial or slang expressions

To assist you in further learning outside the classroom, we recommend you buy the full set of textbook, activity book plus audio CD for approximately $122.

You can purchase the textbook from Abbeys Bookstore (131 York Street, Sydney). It is close to the CBD campus and offers a 10% discount to Sydney Community College students.

Please note: sometimes a course start date is postponed until there are enough enrolments. It is therefore wise to purchase your textbook after your course has been confirmed (usually within three working days of the proposed start).

What to bring to class

Please bring your textbook, a notebook and pen to every class.
