What you'll learn
Learn Patchworking for Beginners with our handcraft short courses in Sydney!
Patchwork quilts are a beautiful expression of heart and home. Sewn by machine, a personalised quilt made for a family member, or a friend, can become a sentimental gift cherished for years.
In this patchwork and quilting course in Sydney, students will be making a “Double Irish Chain” quilt measuring 63” x 83” (or approximately 1.6m x 2.2m). This quilt uses 5 different coordinating fabrics which, when put together, makes a beautiful chequered pattern.
Students will be guided by a highly experienced tutor in measuring, cutting and binding their quilt together, a process that, once understood, can allow for quick assembly.
All of our patchworking courses are limited to 10 places, which enables the tutor to give each student plenty of one-to-one guidance and instruction.
This patchwork class is ideal for beginner and intermediate sewists as some experience with a sewing machine is required. Learn the age-old art of patchwork and quilting in this patchwork short course in Sydney!

What you will need to bring to class?
It is recommended students google “Double Irish Chain” quilts to gain an idea of the colours and fabric patterns you might like for your quilt. Pinterest is a great resource for this!
- 36” x 24” self-healing cutting mat
- 6.5” x 24” quilting ruler
- 48mm rotary cutter (with a sharp blade)
- 60” quilting tape measure
- Glass head quilting pins
- A pack of universal sewing needles
- Sharp fabric scissors
- Fabric 1: For the centre blocks and outer border - A large focal print will work well – 3.5m
- Fabric 2: For the squares and middle border - A medium coordinating print – 2.3m
- Fabric 3: For the squares and inner border – A dark tonal coordinating colour and print – 1.4m
- Fabrics 4 & 5 and quilt wadding: For binding, backing and sandwiching the quilt – These requirements will be discussed in class.
- A large reel of matching, good quality Cotton sewing thread (eg., Guittermans; Aurifil or Mettlers). Please do not buy the cheap thread from the Dollar stores as it tends to create a lot of lint in the machines and is not strong enough to produce a long-lasting quality quilt.
