Course description

Japanese Boro Stitching Workshop in Sydney.

Assembling + Patching + Repairing with contemporary textile artist/designer Lorna Murray.

Calling all textile lovers! Create a textile heirloom piece inspired by the mending and repair culture of traditional Japanese Boro. We will employ intricate hand embroidery techniques to our fabric collages using well-worn, pre-loved and new fabrics. Come along and learn the design and development process of this traditional Japanese textile approach, which is currently making a big resurgence. This workshop is the perfect opportunity to up-cycle and repurpose.

If you love the qualities of hand made cloth and story telling this workshop is for you. Whether just starting out with textiles or you feel like developing your artistic skill further, this one-day workshop is for you.

Bring to Class:
  • An assortment of small hand picked fabric pieces/scraps. (Suggestion -various patterns, textures, shade of colour. Work with one colour scheme)
  • An assortment of threads (embroidery, sewing cottons)
  • Calico fabric x1metre
  • Hand sewing needles (various sizes)
  • Fabric scissors
  • Quick unpick
  • Optional – A pre loved garment which may need mending
Outcomes

By the end of this course you will have:

  • learnt some beautiful hand stitching techniques
  • crafted a beautiful piece of their own
  • learnt the art of slow stitch as a form of mindfulness and relaxation

  • Please wear covered in shoes
  • All our sewing courses are limited to 12 places (10 places in the city venue), which enables the tutor to give each student plenty of one-to-one guidance and instruction
