College Board - Garry Traynor OAM

Qualifications

  • Master of Education (Adult), University of Technology, Sydney;
  • Bachelor of Arts (Visual Art), College of Fine Arts, UNSW;
  • Graduate Diploma (Education), Sydney College of Advanced Education.

Garry is Foundation Principal of Sydney Community College, a position he has held since 1986. He has made a significant contribution to the development and fostering of adult, continuing and community education in Australia throughout his career, for which he received an Order of Australia Medal in January 2018.

Throughout his career, he has presented seminal works at significant international and Australian conferences, including as a keynote speaker. Garry maintains a strong interest in the social value of learning and in how Government education funding and policy shapes and changes organisations, particularly in the community sector. He also holds an active interest in how adult educators and theories of adult education have been challenged by post-modern paradigms.

Memberships

Garry has represented the adult and community education sector on a number of significant boards and committees, including:

  • Member of the National Board of Adult Learning Australia (1999 to 2008) and National President (2005 to 2008);
  • Member of the NSW TAFE Accreditation Council (2005 to 2014);
  • Member and Deputy Chair of the Sydney TAFE Institute Advisory Committee;
  • Member of the Education Advisory Committee, Business Skills Australia (2007 to 2013).
