Course description

Learn how to write memoir in Sydney.

Put simply, life experience combined with a desire to write qualifies you to tell your own story.

Life’s challenges and complexities serve as grist for the writer’s mill and nobody navigates this life without struggle. Our experiences shape us and inform our worldview. Our personal circumstances, combined with our lived-experience, our observations of the world, and our individual personality makes us unique; therefore the narratives of our lives are unique.

Over the course of 8 weeks we will read, discuss and be inspired by extracts from exemplary life-writing texts. We will experiment with writing techniques and form and do regular in-class writing exercises, including journaling. Each week we will focus on a different aspect of life-writing and you will be given the opportunity to share your work and thoughts with the class in a confidential and nurturing environment.

Please note: This is an interactive course and requires regular input from all participants. Please come prepared to share at least some of your experiences and your writing with the class and be willing to engage in class discussion. Throughout the course the teacher will provide feedback on written work through constructive criticism, suggestions on how to improve it, as well as loads of encouragement.
