Learn Tai Chi and fitness with our Sports and Fitness courses in Sydney.
Tai Chi combines soft, slow and firm movements to engage the body and mind to restore the balance of Yin Yang and Qi (life) energy to increase strength and energy, which will help improve your health and well being. Studies have also shown that Tai Chi can help maintain strength, flexibility, and balance.
This course consists of 20 fundamental movements carefully organised to provide the core exercise for the beginners in Tai Chi. These fundamental movements are also known as the practices of “silk reeling” or “silk coiling” skills (pinyin chan-si) in Chen Style Tai Chi. This set of movements has been commonly practised among Tai Chi practitioners and has been selected and organised by Grandmaster Chen Xiaowang to prepare for further forms in Tai Chi, such as the19 form or the Traditional Form One 83 moves.
The name, “silk coiling”, derives from the twisting and spiralling movements of the silkworm larva as it wraps itself in its cocoon, and to the metaphorical principle of “reeling the silk from a silk worm's cocoon”. There are six methods of winding silk energy: inner, outer, upper, lower, forward and backward. They are applied from anywhere on the body: the arms, legs, hips and waist, with the body moving continuously, with endless circularity, wrapped together like intertwined filaments of silk.
The practice of sinking reeling skills are not only beneficial in the harness of Qi energy, but on a more physical aspect, the improvement of body movements. With careful control in the body movements, the Tai Chi beginners can experience the adjustment in their core muscles as well as various related muscles for these movements. The strengthening of these core muscles would allow better postures and believed to relieve posture-induced neck, back, lower back pains, and possibly effective on migraines in various cases.
