Experience
Sally has amassed more than 15 years experience in adult art education. Between 1997 and 2002, she delivered courses in painting, drawing and collage at The Mary Ward Centre in London. It was a great foundation for her current role at SCC, where she has tutored since 2008. Sally has also worked as an ArtEst Art School painting and drawing tutor.
Achievements
Sally’s achievements began stacking up shortly after she graduated in 1993, when she was part of the artist-run studio/exhibition space ‘Notcut’ in Southwark, London. That same year, Sally was awarded an Erasmus scholarship to Berlin, and she is also the recipient of a prestigious scholarship to the Royal College of Art Studio, at Cite des Arts in Paris. Since then, Sally has enjoyed numerous public and private commissions from across the United Kingdom and the United States, and has exhibited her artwork in Britain and Australia. A good number of her students have gone on to full or part-time art education, and/or become successful exhibiting artists.
Teaching Style
In the classroom, Sally’s students can expect one-to-one tuition as well as group learning opportunities, all supported by excellent visual resources and learning materials. Sally encourages students to interpret given projects in an individual way. Her teaching style is informed but non-prescriptive, and is underpinned by critical thinking objectives. She places a strong emphasis on practical experience as well as knowledge acquisition.
She aims to help students of whatever level to find their way into their painting practice in such a way that they will eventually be able to assess their own work and feel confident to take on more complex projects both in class and independently.
Sally’s lessons are biased towards figurative/representational painting, which isn’t a feature of her own work but which she feels is an important foundation from which students can progress.
Something Unique
In 1987, Sally lived in Ankara, Turkey, where she painted and drew constantly. This experience contributed to her desire to become an artist - whose sensibilities would later be shaped by her experience as a student of art in 90s London.
Sally’s most senior student began painting in her late eighties, and Sally helped her curate her first solo show – at the fantastic age of 93!
And something else a little different about Sally (not to mention handy for an artist): She is ambidextrous.
