Course description

Learn Vietnamese in Sydney with this beginner’s class.

Whether you want to learn Vietnamese language for business, travel, family reasons or just for fun, you’ll learn the basics at this informal, practical and interactive course in the Sydney CBD.

Vietnamese shows influences from the Chinese and French, but it’s a modern language with a modified Roman alphabet, with accents to represent particular tones and sounds. It’s a tonal language, so students learn to recognise the different tones that can change the meaning of a word. This Level 1 course will teach you how to communicate in Vietnamese with simple vocabulary and basic sentences.

By the end of this course you will have learned how to:

  • recognise and speak the different tones, and understand how they correspond to the letters in the Vietnamese alphabet
  • understand the differences between the North and South Vietnamese accents
  • greet people and introduce yourself and others
  • ask for and give directions
  • ask for information about travel, places and people’s professions
  • count in Vietnamese, including lower numbers, as well as the larger numbers used in currency
  • talk about modes of transport, travel times, distance, etc
  • use the past, present and future tense
  • ask the price of an item or service
  • use prepositions to describe things
  • tell the time and talk about different times of the day, mealtimes and routines, etc
  • say the days of a week and months of the year
  • use the rules of simple grammar to ask why, when, where questions
  • understand the Vietnamese culture and use appropriate etiquette when communicating in Vietnamese

You will also have the opportunity for plenty of practise in pronunciation and listening.

The curriculum may be adapted slightly to suit the needs of the class. The topics above will be covered during this course, but not necessarily in the order given.

Ideal for

Students with no previous learning in Vietnamese

Course testimonials:

  • Graeme said: The teaching covered many aspects of Vietnamese speech in a very practical manner. The class teacher also encouraged all students to be involved each week and had us speaking Vietnamese words, correcting our speech where necessary. Overall his approach to teaching was encouraging and fun. The only issue was the room we had to use was too small for the number of students.

  • James said: The tutor did not try to impose a too strict learning regime. He allowed the class to learn at a rate all of us could handle and we still managed to complete all the units composing the beginner's part of the course. Bao was also always very willing to walk around to each student and check our work and help with any individual difficulties. He is also a very happy and pleasant person and communicates this well through his knowledge and enthusiasm for teaching Vietnamese language and culture.

  • Nathan said: Great introduction into the Vietnamese language. Learnt a lot more than expected. Glad we didn't just read from the book but had custom material. Would like weekly homework but other than that no complaints. Looking forward to attending Level 2!
