Course outcomes

By the end of this course it is intended that students will understand or be able to:

  • Understand correct microphone usage & set correct sound levels for recording
  • Understand optimal recording environments & troubleshoot in less than optimal environments
  • Be able to record quality audio using a DAW and audio software
  • Be able to fix common audio flaws such as background noise from your recordings
  • Understand how to to edit audio recordings and export in various audio formats

Introduction

  • An overview of audio recording; what you need to do in all phases of production
  • How microphones work and what types are best for voice recording
  • Essential audio terminology
  • Signal-to-noise ratio and its impact on quality recording
  • What minimum equipment required to start recording
  • Essential script elements that guide your recording and post-production editing

Recording

  • Preparing your recording space
  • Microphone placement
  • Audio levels and their importance
  • Projecting your voice, confidence in your delivery, breathing
  • Using pro level digital recorders (DAW) to record your segments
  • Using Adobe Audition to edit them together into your finished programme for distribution
  • Fix common audio issues like bells ring, squeaky doors opening etc.

Post Production

  • Splicing your recorded elements together
  • Removing flaws and noise
  • Adding music and effects
  • Ducking audio under your voice
  • Exporting in appropriate formats for master recording - .wav .m4a .mp3 .aiff and .mp3
  • Formats required for distribution

  • A portable storage device for taking home finished recordings (optional)

Other information

This course runs in our computer lab, fitted with 27-inch Apple iMac systems as well as Dell computers running the Windows operating system, both types of computers have the latest Adobe apps installed. Adobe products function the same on both Windows and Macintosh computers except for minor differences with keyboard usage and where files are located within the computer.
