In this 2 day hands-on DIY workshop you will learn how to safely and economically undertake some of the many small maintenance tasks around your home. This practical home DIY course is the perfect introduction to help you gain the skills and knowledge needed to undertake projects like DIY painting and home maintenance. If you have some small problems around your house, have some unfinished DIY home projects, or if you want to know how to fix things yourself, then this is the right course for you!

Learning outcomes

By the end of this home DIY course, you will have learned:

  • general safety when carrying out home DIY
  • the correct use of drills and drivers
  • how to choose and use the right drill bits and fixings for a variety of applications
  • basic concepts of timber-framed wall construction
  • how to hang a shelf
  • basic plumbing
  • how to install a pane of glass

Course content

Day 1

  • Safety and Housekeeping
  • Introduction to tools needed for home DIY
  • Intro to wall construction, drills, drivers and levels
  • Hang a picture on gyprock
  • Hang a shelf on studs
  • Drill a wall plug into masonry
  • Reglaze a broken window
  • Remove and repair walls

Day 2

  • Drill into, remove and replace a tile
  • Change a washer/fix a tap
  • Grouting and DIY painting
  • Responsible paint clean-up & disposal
  • Question time (pick your instructor’s brain about home projects)

Please bring to class

  • Any drills or tools from home you would like to use
  • Dust masks/respirators
  • Ear and eye protection

Venue and getting there

The Bower Reuse & Repair Centre Workshop
107 Redfern Street, Redfern
(Entry via Turner Street (opposite of 23 Turner Street) from the rear of building)

Entrance to the Bower workshop
The entrance to the Bower workshop is via Turner Street, which is at the rear of 107 Redfern Street and is opposite no. 23. You will see a hand-painted sign “The Bower Woodworks”. If the door is locked, please press the doorbell on the left-hand side of the garage door.

Transportation and Parking
Public transport is the best way to get to the workshop space. The space is close to Redfern Train Station, a local transport hub.

Most nearby parking is 2-hour-timed (including some paid parking on Redfern St) though it clicks over to untimed at 8 pm. Untimed parking is available on Pitt St between Phillip and Wellington St. Turn right from Turner St and head down Pitt St two blocks, untimed parking is on your right.

Other information

  • Please don’t wear your best clothing
  • If you have long hair, please tie it back
  • Wear closed-in shoes. No heels, please
  • Please do not wear jewellery
