Urban Sketching: Drawing Course

Learn Urban Sketching with our drawing courses in Sydney.

Urban Sketching is a course for people who want to draw the world around them.

Go on a journey with our professional artist in Sydney and learn how to draw realistic street scenes and beautiful buildings. Visit cafes, parks and public spaces and discover how to draw the interiors of buildings. You will learn how to observe, compose, simplify a complex scene and create a strong focus. With only a sketchbook, pencil, sharpener and eraser, you are set to go.

The first session starts in our classroom, where you will meet the group before walking to the chosen locations for a day of drawing outdoors. For the second session, the group will meet at a pre-agreed location, usually within walking distance of Sydney CBD.

Optional: Depending on previous learning, you might wish to use other media and add some colour to the drawing. Please discuss your choice with the tutor first for the best result.

Course testimonials:

  • said: I loved learning new techniques and Elinor tailored her instructions to individual needs. The "throw down" at the end where we showed our drawings to each other was very useful as well. Sydney Community College was a bit far from the destination for drawing. Meeting on location for the second class was perfect.

  • said: Tutor Elinor chose excellent locations for her teaching and our learning. She demonstrated numerous techniques that we could practise straight away and gave us plenty of individual assistance as well. Her genuine encouragement and positive specific feedback helped to build my confidence. The materials list was most helpful.

  • said: An excellent introduction from a first class teacher. Eli teaches some key skills and gives lots of encouragement and inspiration to each student. Loved it !

  • said: Ellie is a fantastic teacher. She patiently guided us through a range of useful exercises as well as giving us plenty of time to develop our our own sketches in and around Sydney's cbd streets and parks. All levels of drawing skill will find this course a great introduction to urban sketching and a fantastic precursor to joining an urban sketching meetup.

  • said: Very enjoyable course with a small group... Ellie the tutor was very helpful and constructive. My only criticism is we got a slow start because we had to meet at the college and then walk to Hyde Park for the first session; it meant there was quite a long delay before we started sketching.
