Russ Hermann
Country of birth –
Australia
Other countries I have lived –
England (3 years).
My qualifications –
- Certificate IV in Workplace Training & Assessment
- Certificate in Audio Recording (The School of Audio Engineering)
- Location Sound Recording (AFTRS)
- Introduction to Video Production (AFTRS)
My achievements –
I have taught video production at the Australian Film, Television and Radio School in their former Open Program and at the University of Technology and have been teaching at Sydney Community College since 1994. During the eighties I wrote the notes for a book which was later published as Guide to Video Production by AFTRS. I have worked in the film industry for 30 years, first at the Fairfield Video Access Centre and, since 1980, as a freelance sound recordist in film and a producer/director in video. Most of my work is in documentary, although I have been the sound recordist on two low budget features.
My teaching style –
I always try to ensure that there is a good balance between theory and the practice of film. For each course, participants are able to produce a product at the end. The other part that I stress is being able to read the manuals, as you are never able to cover all aspects of a subject in a short course.
Something unique or unusual that people might not know about me –
I believe that teaching is a two-way process and I always find that I get as much out of it as I have given.
