Course description

Learn Arabic in Sydney with this Beginner’s course.

Whether you want to learn Arabic language for business, travel or just for fun, you’ll learn the basics at this informal, practical and interactive course in the Sydney CBD.

Modern Standard Arabic is the common language used across the Arabic speaking world, bridging the many dialects particular to different regions. Formal Arabic is the written form. This Level 1 course will teach you the basics in speaking, reading, listening and writing. You will learn to communicate with simple vocabulary and basic sentences and gain an understanding of Arab culture in everyday life.

Outcomes

By the end of this Arabic Beginners Class you will have learned how to:

  • identify and pronounce the characters in the Arabic alphabet
  • greet people and introduce yourself
  • ask and respond to simple questions, such as name, nationality, wellbeing, etc
  • understand the differences between formal and familiar speech
  • say the numbers (for phone numbers, addresses, money and age, etc)
  • say the words for days, months, seasons, colours, etc
  • express your personal likes and dislikes, including food preferences
  • understand Arabic cultures, including geography, social customs, family relationships, etc
  • understand basic grammar, including sentence structure, gender of nouns, past and present tense, singular and plural forms, etc.

The curriculum may be adapted slightly to suit the needs of the class. The topics above will be covered during this course, but not necessarily in the order given.

The textbook costs approximately $99 and includes a DVD with audio/video material, as well as access to the companion website.

You can purchase the textbook from Abbeys Bookstore (131 York Street, Sydney). It is close to the CBD campus and offers a 10% discount to Sydney Community College students.

Please note: sometimes a course start date is postponed until there are enough enrolments. It is therefore wise to purchase your textbook after your course has been confirmed (usually within three working days of the proposed start).

  • Your textbook, a notebook and pen to every class.
