In this Saxophone for Beginners course, you will learn how to play and care for your instrument, the fundamentals of reading music, basic theory and playing in tune and in time.

Have fun as you gain an enthusiasm for music through this relaxed course while you learn how to play your instrument and begin to discover the magic of playing music.

Course outcomes

Ideal for

This course is designed for beginners. No previous knowledge of saxophone or music literacy is needed.

  • Care and maintenance of the instrument
  • Tone and embouchure
  • Correct posture and breathing
  • Playing techniques
  • Learn simplified versions of well-known pieces from classical, jazz, folk and contemporary musical genres
  • Basic music theory

  • A Saxophone (Alto or Tenor) with mouthpiece and reeds
  • Sling (neck strap)
  • Cleaning kit
  • 2B Pencil and eraser
  • Cork Grease
  • Music notebook: 1 lined page and 1 page of manuscript to view
  • Coursebook: A New Tune A Day for Alto or Tenor

Important information

The teacher’s recommendation for purchase or hire of Alto or Tenor saxophone, reeds, sling and cleaning kits are Sax & Woodwind and The Music Place. Recommended brands are:

  • Yamaha YAS 280 Alto sax, or
  • Yamaha YTS 280 Tenor sax
  • Jupiter 500 Alto sax
  • “Bambu” cleaning kit
  • “Neotech” sling (make sure you try the size first – junior, regular or XL)
  • Reeds – Rico Royal 1.5 for beginners
  • Avoid instruments sold by retailers who aren’t music shops. You may end up spending more on repair or set up than the instrument is worth.
