- Conduct a safety check of your bicycle, including identifying any potential issues with brakes, gears, chain or tires to ensure your bike is safe to ride.
- Perform a basic bicycle service and identify the necessary tasks according to the condition of your bike.
- Identify and address common issues that can cause damage to your bicycle, such as loose spokes or worn brake pads.
- Develop a systematic approach to maintaining your bicycle.
- Build confidence in your ability to care for your bicycle, including addressing any issues that arise and seeking out additional resources and support as needed.
Course content
What will be covered in this bicycle maintenance workshop?
- Undertaking basic bike maintenance including checking brakes, air and chain.
- Getting to know tools and bike stands used for servicing.
- How to determine if a bike is safe to ride and where to look for damage.
- Ongoing maintenance to reduce the risk of damage and maintain the condition of your bike.
Module 1
- We'll start with an ABC refresher which covers the essential components of a bicycle: air, brakes, and chain.
- You'll learn how to perform an M check to systematically check your bicycle for safety and functionality.
Module 2
- In this module we'll cover rim brakes, including how to adjust them and replace brake pads.
- You'll receive an overview of other types of brakes i.e. disc brakes, mechanical and hydraulic brakes.
- We'll show you how to replace your brake cables and housing.
Module 3
- In this module we'll focus on gears and the importance of gear maintenance.
- We'll cover how to adjust your bike's derailleurs to ensure smooth and accurate shifting.
- You'll learn how to replace a cable and cable housing, which can help improve the performance of your shifting system.
Module 4
- In the final module we'll cover chain and cassette maintenance and when they need to be replaced.
- You'll learn how to properly lubricate your chain to reduce friction and extend the life of your drivetrain.
- We'll cover how to identify if your wheels are out-of-true and how to fix this issue.

This workshop is perfect for any bike rider who would like to gain the knowledge and skills to service their own bicycle. It is advantageous if you have completed a course in, or have some knowledge of, basic bike maintenance.
Course materials
What to bring to class
- Your bike! You must bring your own bike, as you will be working on it during the session.
- Please note: cables and housing for brakes and gears will be provided by Revolve Recycling at no cost. However, if parts like chains, cassettes, brake pads or grips have to be replaced, you can purchase them from Revolve Recycling on the day - at second-hand or wholesale prices.
