Sarah Klenbort

Country of Birth

United States of America (USA)

Qualifications

  • First Class Honours (English), University of Glamorgan, Wales
  • Masters of Fine Arts (Fiction), Columbia University, New York
  • PhD in English Literature (Creative Writing), Binghamton University, New York

Experience

Sarah Klenbort brings extensive teaching experience to her role at Sydney Community College. From 2006 to 2009, Sarah taught creative writing to undergraduate students at Binghamton University. She has also educated freshman to second-year medical students in creative writing at Columbia University.

Achievements

Sarah’s short fiction has appeared in literary journals in Britain, Australia, and the US. She has published a memoir piece in the US literary journal Ninth Letter.

Teaching Style

Sarah enjoys a lively classroom, and often incorporates art and music into various writing exercises. She encourages student participation in the form of small and large workshops. Sarah believes good writing comes from reading, practice, and encouragement.

Something Unique

When Sarah was 18 she studied Chinese in Beijing for nine months in 1992-93. There, she had the opportunity to travel across the country third class (hard sleeper) on a train from Beijing to Kunming – 67 hours each way! She spent three days sitting on someone else’s bottom bunk, speaking rudimentary Chinese, shelling peanuts, and looking out at the passing mountains, farms, and cities. Sarah hasn’t been back to China in 16 years, and doubts she’d recognise the place now!
