Louise Carter
Louise is a Sydney poet with a PhD in Australian romantic poetry from Western Sydney University. Her poetry has been widely published and shortlisted for major awards, and her first collection - Golden Repair - is forthcoming with Giramondo Publishing in 2023. A passionate educator, she has been tutoring literature at University since 2015.
Louise's love of poetry began in high school when she encountered the phrase - An ecstasy of fumbling - in Wilfred Owen's 1921 poem Dulce et Decorum Est. Although this poem describes the gruesome death of a soldier in WWI, it is also extraordinarily beautiful and musical. The epiphany was that beauty and music are the tools that transform words on a page into a living force.
It is poetry's capacity not just to represent the experience of being alive, but to actively infuse its readers with the aliveness that Louise finds fascinating. Join Louise to discover some of the many ways that poets have achieved this in their work. Louise believes the fundamentals of poetic technique will aid her students to craft powerfully alive poetry of their own.
