About your tutor Avril Makula
Avril is a book designer, book artist and bookbinder.
After attaining a visual arts degree, the lure of the printed word led her to a career as a graphic designer specialising in book production and design. Recently she has expanded her art practice, in which she prints and binds books using both traditional and experimental structures. Her multidisciplinary approach gives her a thorough working knowledge of all aspects of bookmaking.
Her handmade books have been exhibited nationally and internationally, and she has won prizes for her work. In 2018, under her Alphabet City Press imprint, Avril published Type Town: a neighbourhood of glyphs, graffiti, ligatures and legs, which features photographs of the artful and fantastic type adorning Sydney’s Inner West. The National Library of Australia and State Library of NSW have added her works to their collections.
About the NSW Guild

The Guild’s membership includes professional bookbinders. The role of the Guild is to provide its members with opportunities for learning skills at all levels and a venue to foster interest in, and knowledge of, this ancient and modern craft.
The creative and practical art of bookbinding offers hours of challenging enjoyment to those who value text and image set between the covers of a book. The NSW Guild of Craft Bookbinders offers members a professionally equipped bindery where they may practise their craft and attend workshops under the guidance of experienced tutors, increasing their knowledge and expertise in both traditional and modern bookbinding techniques.
