Learning outcomes
By the end of this 2.5-hour workshop, participants should be able to:
- Identify key components of front and rear derailleur systems
- Understand how shifting works and how force is transferred through the drivetrain
- Diagnose common gear issues such as skipping, hesitation, or chain noise
- Use essential bike tools safely and effectively for gear inspection and adjustment
- Adjust rear derailleurs (limit screws, indexing, cable tension)
- Adjust front derailleurs (limit screws, height, alignment)
- Perform basic drivetrain maintenance such as cleaning, lubrication, and visual inspection
- Build confidence in hands-on gear maintenance through guided practice

What will be covered in this Bike Gears and Derailleurs Workshop?
Getting started
- Introductions (name, pronouns, cycling style)
- Workshop safety briefing: tools, PPE, and bike-handling etiquette
- Overview of gear systems: 1x vs 2x, mechanical shifting, common derailleur types
Tools & techniques
- Identifying derailleur parts and their functions
- Understanding cable tension, limit screws, and indexing
- Troubleshooting common gear problems
- Hands-on adjustment of rear derailleurs
- Hands-on adjustment of front derailleurs
- Basic drivetrain care: chain cleaning and lubrication
Expect a mix of theory, demonstration, and hands-on practice. Mistakes are part of the learning process, your facilitator will support you throughout.
