Experience
Katrina has been teaching and tutoring Tetun since 2010 and uses this language on a daily basis with her husband who is from East Timor. She has lived and worked in East Timor and has written and produced the two textbooks and CDRom used in the Tetum courses run at the College.
She is also fluent in Indonesian and Fataluku (a language spoken in the east of East Timor) and is an experienced translator and interpreter.
Achievements and Qualifications
- Indonesian Language Certificate Level 2 & 3 (Udayana University, Indonesia)
- Undergraduate degree majoring in Linguistics – S1 Sastra Indonesia (undertaken in the Indonesian language) Gadjah Mada University, Indonesia
- PhD Scholarship (Australian Postgraduate Award) Monash University School of Languages, Cultures and Linguistics.
- Certificate IV in Training and Assessment (TAA40101)
- Federation Fellowship Award
- Nomination for Young Australian of the year
- Honouring women in Moreland awards
Teaching Style
Katrina’s style is to encourage students to be active participants in their own language learning. There is a strong focus on using the language, and setting learners up to be able to continue learning Tetun into the future.
Something Unique
Katrina is an avid reader of novels, plays the piano and sings in a choir.
