Learn creative nonfiction and editing essentials at this writing course in Sydney.

Build a strong foundation for fiction, nonfiction, creative writing, and copywriting. This course will help you master the core writing tools needed for creative writing – for fiction and nonfiction. You will also learn how to edit and structure your writing for clarity, brevity, and simplicity.

Designed for all writers great and small, this course will help you conquer any writing task: blogs, essays, articles, features, reports, novels, memoirs, copywriting, how-to manuscripts, short stories, travel writing, business writing, and science writing.

The course fee includes a copy of the prescribed textbook,Create, Narrate, Punctuate: How to Fashion Exquisitely Styled Sentences, written by Ramy Tadros.

Course content
  • Find that just-right balance
  • Grow your sentences in three main ways to capture different audiences
  • Show — don’t tell
  • Grasp, master, and use rhetorical devices to influence any audience
  • Structure your writing to suit your target audience
  • Create a unique hook and bookend
  • Tailor the length of sentences to suit readers
  • Be active (and sometimes passive)
  • Use strong action verbs and concrete concepts
  • Mould left-, mid-, and right-branching sentences
  • Master punctuation marks to be clearly understood.

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • write in a clear, concise, and engaging style, by embracing simple, conjunction-rich, and phrase-filled sentences
  • avoid common writing blunders and edit writing for clarity, brevity, and simplicity
  • wield advanced writing techniques, such as tuning a verb’s voice or applying rhetorical devices, to attract a target audience
  • master the main sentence patterns and correctly use punctuation marks (colons, semicolons, hyphens, en dashes, and em dashes) to be clearly grasped
  • structure a piece of creative writing by including an appealing hook and an unexpected ending (bookend).
Before the class – please organise:
  • A notebook with removable pages and something to write with
  • A laptop (optional)
