Course description

Learn Modern Calligraphy with the uncial hand in Sydney.

Modern Calligraphy can be used in business and everyday life. It can be used to reflect your personality, style and creativity – everyone can learn it! By learning the beautiful art of calligraphy, you will be gaining an understanding of its rich history and the development of our modern alphabet.

This series of workshops is designed to introduce you to the Contemporary styles or scripts of Copperplate, Modern Pointed Pen, Uncial Hand, Italic, Foundational and Medieval Gothic Hand. This workshop focuses on the Uncial Hand.

Learn how to work with pen and ink and other mediums.

All levels are welcome from beginners to those who want to brush up on their skills.

Course content

In this course, you will study:

  • how to write with a pointed nib and ink
  • this script style, letter construction and characteristics
  • letter form, spacing and create our "own style"
  • flourishing
  • numerals
  • colour, layout and design skills with the idea of combining all of the above to produce a small piece of work.
Learning outcomes

By the end of this Modern Calligraphy Workshop Class, you should be able to apply:

  • letters and numerals of the Copperplate hand
  • spacial awareness
  • analytical skills for letter form and shape
  • an understanding of layout and design skills
  • colour and design techniques
  • all learned skills to a piece of work or project.
Please come prepared

If you purchase a kit from the tutor, please bring only the following items:

  • Ruler
  • Water jar
  • Pencil

If you wish to purchase ALL materials, and NOT get a kit from the tutor, then please purchase the following items:

  • A4 or A3 layout pad – Canson
  • Pointed pen nib- Zebra G nib recommended
  • Pen holder – Speedball oblique holder or straight holder
  • Ink- Black Sumi ink or Chinese stick ink
  • Ruler, pencil HB
  • Water jar, rag

  • Closed-in shoes required
