Course description

Woodwork – Stool Workshop for Kids

This is a DIY workshop designed for parents/guardians and their children, demonstrating basic traditional chair making and timber shaping knowledge and skill. Participants will use second hand materials to make a small stakes leg stool using traditional tools and methods.

This is a team effort workshop and runs during school holidays. Class sizes are kept small to ensure maximal learning experience.

Ideal for…
  • This course is designed for children (min 10yrs) to attend with their Parents/Guardians. One child per adult.
  • No previous knowledge or experience with woodwork is needed.
Course content
  • Knowledge of general safety in the workshop
  • Understanding of second-hand timber
  • Basics of staked furniture
  • Grain direction and strength
  • Project outline and assembly
  • Use of varies woodworking tools and equipment
  • Sanding, finishing and coating
Learning outcomes

By the end of the course you will have:

  • an understanding of working with wood and wood grain
  • knowledge of traditional stakes leg construction
  • learned how to shape timber with hand tolls
  • insight of joinery strength in staked chair construction
  • skills with spoke shaves, hand planes, brace and bit, and drills
  • spent a great time with your child, building your own small stool or bench to take home!
Materials

All tools and materials are provided, however students are welcome to bring their own tools – old and new – and learn how to use and maintain them.

  • Please don’t wear your best clothing
  • If you have long hair, please tie it back and wear closed-in shoes
  • The Bower’s facilitators have a ‘working with children’ check.
