Course description

Vegetable Gardens Workshop in Sydney.

The motivation for wanting to grow food at home are many. There are some great ways of increasing productivity for any given space. This workshop will go through the basics so you can understand how to create your very own edible garden at home, from selecting the right plant for the right place to creating an ecological edible garden that includes natives and flowers.

Learn to grow your own vegetables, aimed specifically at container and small space gardeners, in Sydney.

Agenda

  • The Leaf, Root & Fruit philosophy of Edible Gardening, understanding how plants function.
  • Hints and tips on getting the most out of your containers.
  • Planning Your Veggie Patch: Grow What Where?
  • Site analysis: Access your microclimate and space
  • Go for Height: Vertical spaces and vertical gardens
  • Plant requirements and how they affect container gardens
  • Raised garden beds
  • Soil (creating super soil) and different types of soil
  • Container gardening: common pitfalls for new gardeners
  • Seeds vs seedlings and veggie patch layout
  • Variety Selection: Heirloom vs Hybrid vs GMO
  • Types of plants suited to container gardens
  • Herbs, Edible Flower, Bush Tucker (Native Edibles) and Dwarf Fruit Trees.
  • Seasonality, a basic discussion around what to plant and when.
  • Organic fertilizing regimes and Green Manures
  • Dealing with Weeds and Disease
  • Water (watering, transpiration and evaporation, mulching.
  • Planting and harvesting for year round abundance
  • Beneficial Insects: Their importance to gardens (bees, pest/predator interactions).
  • Its' not waste it’s a commodity (composting, worm farming, harvesting unusual parts of plants, seed saving)

Other Information

  • Please bring pen and paper or tablet to take notes.
  • Please dress for gardening, with closed shoes.
  • Bring lunch and a water bottle / keep cup (we have coffee & tea & cold filtered water on site).

PLS NOTE: All classes need a minimum number of students to go ahead. If your course does not have enough students it will be cancelled and you will be informed. Courses are usually cancelled, when necessary, 2 working days prior to the scheduled start date.
