Course description

How to make a rag rug workshop in Sydney.

In this course you will learn an easy and satisfying technique that allows you to make beautiful hooked rugs from old garments and woollen fabric. You can furnish your home in a unique way and make something useful while recycling fabric which would otherwise go to waste, turning fabric scraps into a beautiful durable rug that can often last many decades.

This craft, invented out of necessity in times past, is having a resurgence today as we look for ways to conserve resources and beautify our surroundings. By the end of the workshop you will have learnt the technique of rug hooking, begun a small sample rug, and have the knowledge and enthusiasm to embark on a larger project at home.

By the end of the course the student will have learned:

  • Rug design and the history of rag rugs
  • Choosing and preparing fabric to use
  • Hooking technique
  • Finishing and caring for your rug
  • Other things you can make using this technique
Materials List

Please bring to the first class:

  • Sharp scissors which are suitable for cutting fabric
  • Optional: old garments or fabric scraps or unwanted material to make into rugs. Woollen material, or material with some wool content is best, for example, old woollen blankets, jerseys, cardigans, coats, tweed, old wool dressing gowns, machine knits. Wool is good because it is hard wearing, and doesn’t fade or fray too much, but other kinds of fabric can also be used. Aim to find things that have a reasonably tight weave/knit.
  • Note pad and pen or tablet for taking notes

*Keepcup or mug for tea is provided

Materials Provided

  • Some extra scissors for use on the day
