Course description

Learn how to make jewellery out of Precious Metal Clay in this intermediate course in Sydney.

Precious Metal Clay (PMC) can be shaped and textured to make wearable jewellery, beads and small sculptures. Continue working with this user friendly and completely malleable clay that excitingly transforms to 99.9% pure silver.

An experienced tutor will guide you through the design process – development and finish – so that you can achieve your creative goal. You will be introduced to various techniques to assist them with the transfer of creative idea to finished piece.

Go home with a finished piece of fine silver and an array of newly learnt skills. This is a great hands-on workshop that provides an exciting environment for the production of beautiful and unique pieces of jewellery.

Learning outcomes

By the end of this course you will have:

  • learned knowledge of Precious Metal Clay and an understanding of the medium and its capabilities
  • an understanding of basic tools
  • learned knowledge of the correct safety procedures required when handling the medium
  • gained knowledge of various artistic methods that can be employed with Precious Metal Clay
  • learned of the advantages and disadvantages of Precious Metal Clay compared with working with traditional silversmithing techniques
  • produced a ring jewellery piece in Precious Metal Clay
What we provide
  • 15 grams of Precious Metal Clay. Students are welcome to bring their own if they wish to work with more or can purchase more at the College
  • All tools and safety equipment (aprons, goggles and masks)
  • A selection of textured surfaces will be provided, though students may bring their own.
  • Handouts to take home

  • Notebook
  • Selection of textures to impress into the clay (stamps, buttons, textured surfaces – items should be plastic, wood or stainless steel as other metals can tarnish the silver)

  • Closed-in shoes required
  • Please wear old clothes
  • Long hair must be tied back
  • Does not include stone setting
