Course description

Introduction to power tools workshop in Sydney.

This weekend workshop, is part of our Woodwork program, and is designed to give a basic first hand introduction to carpentry and woodworking power tools. This is a skills based workshop with participants having the opportunity to learn and practice the correct and safe operating procedure for a number of power tools.

Ideal for
  • Those with little to no knowledge or experience in woodworking
Course content
  • Introduction
  • Safety and Housekeeping
  • Measuring and marking out
  • Using handsaws
  • Discuss use and benefits of personal protective equipment (PPE)
  • Safe use of drop saw, jigsaw and circular saw
  • Save use of drills and drivers
Outcomes

By the end of this course you will:

  • have a general understanding of safety in the workshop
  • be able to plan and measure using timber
  • have learned the correct handsaw technique
  • have learned how to safely use drop saws, jigsaws, circular saws and drills/drivers
Please bring
  • Any drills or tools from home you would like to use
  • Any PPE you would like to use eg. (ear/eye protection, dust mask, etc.)

The Bower Reuse & Repair Centre Workshop
107 Redfern Street, Redfern
(Entry via Turner Street (opposite of 23 Turner Street) from rear of building)

Entrance to the Bower workshop
The entrance to the Bower workshop is via Turner Street, which is at the rear of 107 Redfern Street and is opposite no. 23. You will see a hand-painted sign “The Bower Woodworks”. If the door is locked, please press the doorbell on the left-hand side of the garage door. Please note, the doors for the venue will be open from 5:30pm.

Transportation and Parking
Public transport is the best way to get to the workshop space. The space is located close to Redfern Train Station, a local transport hub.

Most nearby parking is 2-hour-timed (including some paid parking on Redfern St) though it clicks over to untimed at 8pm. Untimed parking is available on Pitt St between Phillip and Wellington St. Turn right from Turner St and head down Pitt St two blocks, untimed parking is on your right.

Other information
  • Please don’t wear your best clothing
  • If you have long hair, please tie it back
  • Wear closed-in shoes, no heels please
  • Please do not wear jewellery
