Course description

Create a great gift. Document your story.

In this practical picture book making class, learn how to produce a professional-looking photo book. Beginning with a set of your own hand-picked images (200+), learn about the different book types, paper stock, bindings, cover styles, see samples from some of the best companies on the market, learn about their product options, plus the advantages and disadvantages they might have.

Participants will learn how to make their own page layouts using free software, how to create good page design, how to access new and exciting fonts, create custom backgrounds and how to add textures and special effects to give their book project a unique feel.
The concept behind this class is to work with a set of (previously edited) photos and explore ways to put the final touches on the book project during the workshop meetings.

The final book, once completed and uploaded to the Blurb server, is then critiqued by the tutor before you actually order the product.

• Learn basic photo editing to prepare your photos for the book
• Learn basic and advanced page layout tricks and tips
• Understand how to create high impact page design
• How to add, edit and manage text
• Stretching panoramas across multiple pages
• Fading pages to another colour (i.e. black-and-white to colour)
• Creating page breaks and section headers
• Using filters and other special effects
• Exporting the book project
• Uploading the book project to the Internet from home to the print company using the same (free) software used in this course
• Overview on what different book companies offer and book styles

The software allows each book to reside on its server for 14 days before payment is required – this gives the tutor time to review the book project, online, and provide feedback so, if there are any glaring mistakes, a new, corrected version, can be uploaded before payment is made and you are 100% committed to the print job. (Note: If you do not order and pay for the book in that two week period, it is automatically deleted off the server, but you retain the original on your home computer).

Once the book is finished and uploaded to the Blurb server, you have the opportunity to get comprehensive feedback on the final product from the tutor before you part with your money. Feedback is delivered in the form of a video recording that is then posted online at www.vimeo.com

Course Notes

Several introductory QuickTime tutorial movies (PC and MAC compatible) will be distributed during the class and will remain online for students to access.

What You Will Need – Note from Your Tutor

Please arrive on the day with a library of 200+ carefully chosen JPG photos for your project.
The first session will be spent editing your images. Additional editing work may need to be done at home before session 2. Put them all into a folder entitled ‘MyBookProject’ (or similar) on a DVD, USB or portable hard drive. To get an idea of numbers, I recently finished a 220-page book that used 330 images. Also you might like to bring a bunch of your ‘not sure’ JPEGs (in case we need to find a ‘similar’ shot to one already chosen to balance a page design, for example). Save these into a separate folder.

NOTE: At present Blurb does not recognise sub-folders so it’s best NOT to subdivide your shots into multiple folders. That said, if you do, you can import them to Booksmart one folder at a time. This works OK but it takes longer. Warning: It’s a waste of your time and money to spend class time sorting through 8,000 images from your recent trip. Get them sorted beforehand!
