Course description

Night Photography course in Sydney.


Night time photography is a world of creative opportunity, have fun discovering light trails and the brilliant colours of the night in a friendly informative atmosphere! This course will take you through the compostional, technical and post production elements that go into creating beautiful night time imagery. You will learn how to utilise long exposure techniques to make the city lights come alive, light painting with objects moved around in the air and the power of the moving image at night by the use of interval photography to make timelapses.

A course is suitable for beginners who have a basic understanding of their DSLR camera and have access to a tripod.

Course Content

This course is split into 3 weeks with a theory, practical and photo editing week for each.

Class 1: Theory – Elements of Night Imaging (3 hours)

  • Basic creative & compositional elements
  • Long Exposure
  • Light Drawing
  • Light Painting
  • Camera Painting
  • Metering & exposure
  • Long exposure & DSLR
  • Multi-exposure
  • Hand-held & exposure
  • DSLR night video
  • DSLR interval photo-video
  • Hyper-lapse video
  • Image editing
  • Video development

Class 2: Field Practice

This class is a 3 hour practical where students will meet at a pre-determined city location, most likely Darling Harbour or the Rocks. Students can choose as many or as few of the below to make over this 3 hour period.

  • Light Drawing, Light Painting or Camera Painting
  • Timelapse or Hyperlapse
  • Long Exposure photography

Class 3: Post Production & Photo Editing

Using Adobe Lightroom in our state of the art computer suite each student will have access to photo editing software that will enable them to edit, enhance and export the work done in week 2.

  • Develop images from the field practice
  • Image editing
  • Create video from interval photos
  • Presentation of final Images
Outcomes

By the end of this workshop you will be able to:

  • Learned how to use the metering of their camera to assess low and nightlight
  • Understand the technical requirements to take photos at night
  • Gained practical experience on photoshoots
  • Take creative night photos and video
  • Edit and develop interval-video and photos with Light Room
  • Export your images and video from Light Room
  • practiced how to manipulate low light in various ways
What to bring (Week 2 only)
  • DSLR or Mirrorless camera with 50mm or zoom lens between 35-200mm
  • SD Card with minimum 8GB space
  • Tripod is essential
