Course description

This course is for beginners in the Japanese floral art of Ikebana. It will teach them the basic skills and help them understand the main principles. The Ikenobo School is the oldest Ikebana school in Japan with a history of over 550 years. Students will also learn the beauty of Japanese culture and the philosophy behind Ikebana. The course will be conducted by Aya Shibata, a Professor of the Ikenobo School.

Agenda
  • Introduction to Ikenobo.
  • Explanation and demonstration of free style and pattern arrangements, using the same flowers and materials as the students.
  • Combination of materials.
  • Selecting the right vase for an arrangement.
  • Basic knowledge of materials, including flowers and other plant parts.
  • Placing of arrangements according to today’s lifestyle and environment.
Objectives

By the end of this class you will have learned:

  • How to use the basic tools, clippers, kenzans and vases.
  • How to understand the nature of different plants.
  • How to make at least three different styles of arrangement.
  • How to transport arrangements to new locations.
Materials provided
  • All students will receive a starter kit of kenzan, container and clippers to use in class, which can also be purchased for $100.
  • All flowers and other materials.
Please bring
  • Pen and paper.
  • Small towel and bucket.

Please wear closed in shoes. You may like to wear an apron.
