Course description

1 day crash course in video editing.

Got some home videos you’ve been meaning to cut together? Or perhaps some footage on your phone you want to edit and post to Facebook? Or maybe you want to help your kids edit their own movies? This 1 day editing workshop will provide the beginner video editor with the basics of cutting together their own movies so they can share their creations with family, friends and the world!

Students will create stunning edits using a range of stock & short film footage. Students will learn to how to navigate the timeline effectively using basic shortcuts as well as adding effects, titles, transitions & music. Students will be encouraged to bring their own flair to edits, starting with simple tasks and moving up into more complex operations so they can utilise the wide range of features iMovie offers.

iMovie from Apple

This course utilises Apple’s iMovie editing software. iMovie is a cheap software solution that can be downloaded from the App store. iMovie is a simple and user friendly program aimed at the non-professional editor. You can edit your own footage shot on any device or camera to create cinematic trailers and edit your own videos from scratch. You can even edit on an iPhone or iPad. It’s never been easier to make your own videos at home. Just choose the clips you want to use then rearrange and cut them on the timeline, insert titles, add transitions & effects and add a soundtrack with easy to use drag and drop tools.

This course is suitable for the complete beginner, it is aimed at those who think a professional editing program may be beyond their needs and are looking for a quick and simple way to create fun and interesting video content. If you are looking to add some simple but effective extras to your footage then this course is for you. We cater to the amateur video enthusiast as well as home business owners looking to get creative with their advertising as well as teachers looking to incorporate more into their lesson plans. Whether it be in-house training videos, professional looking YouTube videos or to add some flare to travel footage you have. No prior knowledge of editing is needed to attend the course but some competency with computers and specifically Macintosh computers is assumed.

  • If available to the student please bring an iPhone or iPad with iMovie installed on it.
About your tutor

Marcus is the head of the Film & Video courses at Sydney Community College and is also a freelance video editor, actor and filmmaker. Marcus has has been making and editing short films from an early age and now works with a collective of filmmakers and sound designers who make film-clips and short films. Marcus also shoots and edits web content for small businesses. He is a patient and passionate teacher with a strong intuition for the feel and pace of a story in any type of edit. Marcus aims to make his classes fun and interactive and is able to work with varying abilities and student aims.
