Course description

Filmmaking For Beginners has been designed to help you release your inner filmmaker. In this course you will explore influences, learn about the craft of filmmaking, and devise, shoot and edit a short piece. Learn to construct a video from the concept to the final cut! Have you got an idea for a film? Maybe you like the idea of entering TropFest, but have no idea where to start? Then this course can help get you started and give you all the skills you need to create your own film from concept, to script and shooting, to final production!

Learning Outcomes:

Over the duration of this Filmmaking for Beginners Class students will:

  • Look at the history of filmmaking
  • Explore methods of funding
  • Explore pre-production, production, post production
  • Study film grammar and terminology
  • Begin to develop an analytical and critical eye in order to process of visual storytelling
  • Identify their preferred role in the filmmaking process
  • Gain practical experience
  • Learn how to prepare digital packages for festivals and distribution
Additional Information

As part of homework students will be required to view a movie and some selected scenes from movies.
Students are free to shoot their pieces on a mobile phone, tablet, DSLR or video camera.

Please bring
  • Note pad and pen or tablet to take notes
  • Water and snacks
  • A hard drive and headphones to the editing class
