Course description

Diy bird feeder (birdhouse) workshop in Sydney.

Build a homemade birdhouse in this one-day workshop and learn basic carpentry knowledge and skills to construct a simple nest box for endangered native bird species from reclaimed material.

Doing so, you are supporting local bird life and gain a slug and bug buster.

Discuss your ideas with the tutor and go home with a nest box you can take home with the fixings and knowledge to install box correctly.

Class sizes are kept small to ensure maximal learning experience.

This course is designed for those with no knowledge or experience with woodwork.

Course content
  • Safety and Housekeeping
  • Importance and varieties of Nest Boxes
  • Project outline
  • Properties of timer, its external use and salvaged materials
  • Introduction to jigsaws, circular saws and drills/drivers
  • Box assembly
  • Attach hinged lid
  • Sealing and Waterproofing
  • Installation method
Learning outcomes

By the end of the course the you will have

  • knowledge of general safety in the workshop
  • an understanding of second hand timber
  • knowledge of good woodworking practices for external use
  • knowledge of different local, endanger species and their nest box varieties
  • an understanding of correct marking out and how to work accurately to a plan
  • hands-on experience and guidance with drill, driver, jigsaw, handsaw and circular saw
Materials

All tools and materials are provided, however students are welcome to bring their own tools – old and new – and learn how to use and maintain them.

Please bring
  • Any drills or tools from home you would like to use (optional)
  • any PPE you would like to use (for example: ear/eye protection, dust mask etc)
