Coping with Climate Change: Free Community Workshop

View Classes

This special community event is for people feeling concerned by the prospect of a future affected by climate change.

Join environmental educator Victoria Walker for a short course on a variety of teachings, experiences and practices to move through feelings of fear and discomfort. The session aims to help you to find peace amid the uncertainty, and design a personal course of action for positive change.

Ideal for

Anyone concerned about climate change and wanting to make a positive contribution for the future.

Please note: This is not a forum for debate on climate change. It is a safe space where we respect the diversity of viewpoints, however we start from a position of acceptance of climate change as scientifically proven and do not welcome debating or denying climate change at this event.

Course content

Through both presentation and group discussion, this single-day course will look at…

Thoughts

  • What is the function of our thoughts? Brain vs heart.
  • How have we been taught to think and where did it come from?
  • Role of media / public / cultural influences on our thoughts
  • Changing our thoughts and recognising thought 'traps'
  • Living with intention

Feelings

  • What are we feeling about climate change and how does this affect our experience?
  • Avoiding and denying feelings – why and how do we do this?
  • Learning to listen to our feelings, allowing them to ‘flow’
  • Surviving periods of powerful emotions and working with anger

Action

  • Rethinking the power of your actions
  • Individual and collective action
  • Personal vs political action
  • What makes you tick? How can your actions become an expression of YOU?

The future

  • A look at Active Hope – Joanna Macy
  • How to ‘do hope’ in these times
  • Living in uncertainty, and finding the beauty in it
  • Finding opportunity – creativity, innovation
  • Daily practices and ‘living your values’
Learning outcomes

By the end of this session, students will:

  • have learned strategies to overcome difficult emotional states such as fear, anger and powerlessness when thinking about future scenarios
  • feel motivated to act for positive change in a way that is sustainable, empowering and personal
  • have learned how to feel more positive about the opportunities that uncertainty can provide – recognising that times of change are powerful opportunities for creating new directions in culture
  • be aware of unhelpful thought patterns and ‘thought traps’ that we have learned, and have strategies to address them.
Please bring
  • drinking water in a refillable bottle
  • your own mug (if you’d like a cuppa during the break)
  • pen & paper / device if you would like to take notes
  • lunch and/or snacks

There will be short lunch break, but limited places nearby to purchase food.

Avoid disappointment. Enrol early.

Please ensure that you have given a valid email and mobile number as all course changes will be communicated via sms or email.
