Learn to Sew: Mixed Level Workshops

View Classes

Learn sewing and patternmaking with our sewing courses in Sydney.

In this course, you’ll learn techniques like machine stitching, garment making, hand stitching, and more...

This mixed-level workshop is an opportunity to learn new skills and enjoy the company of others, who share a love of garment making, sewing, and stitching. This is a small, intimate class where you can learn from professional fashion designers and get help with your current project. Each lesson we will be able to collaborate, be inspired by others' projects, share tips and tricks, and celebrate the act of making. Start a new project, or bring along one that you are working on to get expert help and guidance!

It is advised to have some basic prior experience with sewing to attend these sessions.

Course content

As this is a drop-in 3-hour workshop, it is impossible to cover all of these topics, however, this is a range of some of the topics that you might expect to see a few of in each workshop:

  • Discuss a commercial pattern and get to know the terminology on the pattern and what all the various markings are
  • Fabric selection and spend some time learning about the perfect fabric/pattern design marriage
  • Cutting efficiently and learning about why some fabrics must be cut a certain way i.e. stretch fabrics, velvets, cords, and one-way prints
  • Laying out your pattern and cutting out your fabric
  • Sewing a complete garment
  • Darts, hems, pockets, zippers, panels, binding, piping, and more!
  • Trims and finishes

Please bring to class

  • A sewing project that you are working on OR pattern and fabric to start your new project
  • Various size (hand) sewing needles (if you are doing hand stitching)
  • Various coloured embroidery threads, woolen threads, crochet threads (if you are hand stitching) or machine threads (if you are machine sewing)
  • Unpicker
  • Clear plastic Singer bobbins x 1 packet of two (for machine sewing)
  • Pins and pincushion
  • 1 pair of fabric cutting scissors
  • 1 pair of small thread cutting scissors or clippers
  • Measuring tape
  • And zippers, buttons, fastenings or finishes you may need
  • Notebook, ruler, pen and pencil to take notes
  • You are welcome to bring along your machine (if portable) if you would prefer to learn on it. Our Rozelle campus has onsite parking.
  • MACHINE NEEDLES: The machines on campus take standard domestic sewing machine needles. They will have 130/705 H on the packaging somewhere to tell you they are domestic type, which is different from the code for the size of the needle (an 80 or 90 size needle is best for use with sew-all thread).
  • BOBBINS: They must be plastic, not metal. They must be designed for TOP LOADING or “Drop-In” machines. The best bet is to buy a pack that says it’s suitable for Singer Drop In machines or Janome Drop In machines (either one will work on both machines). Avoid “universal” bobbins as there is no one-size-fits-all bobbin.
  • THREAD: a quality thread brand is recommended. Some of the more common household brands are Gutermann, Rasant, Mettler, Aurifil.
