Course content

During this course the intention is that the following topics will be covered, but not necessarily in the order given. Due to the variable nature of Adult Education classes, parts of the curriculum may be adapted to suit the needs of the class.

  • Each lesson begins with a warm-up, flexing the muscles, limbering ankle and knee joints and stimulating breathing, and ends with a cool-down
  • Tap steps, combinations and simple rhythms are taught and revised at the start of each lesson
  • A tap routine is taught and practised, with steps added each week until the routine is completed.
  • The routine is practised each lesson and perfected before a new routine is commenced.
  • One complex routine or two simple routines will be completed over the six weeks of the course
Outcomes

By the end of this course you will be able to:

  • develop a sense of rhythm
  • learn basic tap steps
  • integrate steps and movement into a routine
  • perform the routine

Other Information

Please note: It is the mission of Sydney Community College to provide quality, accessible education and training. Our commitment to improve the quality of all courses we offer is on going. This extends to ensuring the safety of all our students and we therefore require you to complete the following Physical Activity Readiness Questionnaire (PAR-Q). If you enrol by phone a PAR-Q will be sent with your enrolment confirmation. If you enrol on-line please download a PAR-Q form from the ‘more’ section (under forms) on the home page or see the attachment below.

For all courses involving physical activity you must arrive by the published course commencement time or the tutor may refuse to admit you into the session. Feedback From Past Students

'Loved what she is doing and made us feel far less inept than we should!'

'Prue is approachable, friendly and a lovely teacher. It doesn’t matter how many blank faces are staring back at her she can still help us through the steps so we all get it and with a smile on her face! That’s all I need to get back to class each week!'

'I love tap. I love to learn. Prue is a great teacher. I can’t wait to go back!'

'She broke everything down well and made it and really fun – an upbeat experience.'

'Loved everything about it. Will be back next term.'

'Prue is a fabulous teacher! She is enthusiastic, funny, very encouraging and clear in her instructions.'

'Love everything about it. I love tap!'

'It was very, very fun. The class came a long way in a short time. Prue is fabulous.'

'High energy, great teacher and makes it lots of fun. Enthusiastic. Pushed us gently.'

'I LOVE the class, Prue is a wonderful teacher.'

'Being by far the oldest member of the class, Prue went out of her way to make me feel part of it, showed me a way to learn the steps despite my abysmal balance and do all of this with patience and good humour. My chances of ever perfecting the routine are about the same as flying to the moon unaided, but it was fun trying and I’ll give the course another go later in the year... The care of course planning taken by the instructor was excellent given the range of ages of those taking part. The course was well thought out and gave those with the skills the chance to learn quickly. It was all done with good humour and enjoyed by all participants.'

'Prue is the best Tap teacher in Sydney! She was fantastic at breaking down difficult steps and taught us a lot on a short amount of time. The wooden floor is wonderful to dance on. This course was wonderful! Prue is wonderfully enthusiastic and her infectious spirit flows through to us all. Her teaching method is extremely inclusive. I love the course, the fact that at sixty years of age I can go along and feel completely unselfconscious due to Prue’s wonderful teaching style.'

'The tutor is so wonderfully warm and friendly and never judges. She is kind and so so much fun to learn from! Having no previous dance experience at all, I found some parts challenging. The classes are quite fast
paced but if you have time to practice between classes there shouldn’t be a problem. I hugely enjoyed this class and have enrolled to do it again! So much fun!'

'Very informed, knew how to break down the steps, was very engaged with our level of understanding. It was cute, good place to tap, a bit far from where I live but there are now places closer that give this kind of lesson. Great teacher, set achievable goals, had a fun time and met great new people.'

'Prue is the most wonderful Tap teacher, she is careful to learn everyone’s name and is brilliant at switching up her teaching style to suit individuals. I learnt so much in her classes. 10/10 because every detail about the experience was lovely.'

'A fun and relaxed atmosphere and a very very patient teacher. A great big space, lovely wood floor, unique evocative atmosphere. I learnt a lot in a fun and supportive environment. This course was the highlight in my week, washed/ danced all my cares away! Great teacher – patient, lovely, skilled!.'

'All students were accommodated for – both in their personality quirks and their tap dancing skill levels.'

Avoid disappointment. Enrol early.
