Learn fabric block printing in Sydney.

Join us for a full day hands-on course to learn fabric printing using lino and traditional woodblocks.

Our professional tutor will guide you step by step on the process of learning this ancient art of fabric printing. You will also learn the design composition and repeating patterns, as you print your own designs onto cotton fabric using traditional block printing techniques.

Participants will create a unique lino block and use authentic Indian woodblocks.

Learning outcomes

By the end of this Fabric block printing course, you should have:

  • learned how to identify block printed fabrics
  • have experienced the process of relief printing
  • have learned to cut and print from a lino block design
  • have experimented with a variety of methods to produce print onto fabric
  • have printed your own piece of cotton fabric to take home.

Course content

During this course, the following topics will be covered, but not necessarily in the order given.

  • Appreciate the history and tradition of relief printing on fabric
  • Preparation of fabric and printing materials and equipment
  • How to cut a lino block
  • Print using a combination of blocks
  • Understand multi-colour printing

Ideal for 

No previous design or printing experience required.

What to bring to class

  • This is a practical course, strength and dexterity are required
  • Drawing pad, pens, pencils etc, for your designs
  • An additional item to print on, if time permits. (e.g., a white T-shirt or light-coloured cotton fabric which has been washed)
  • Please wear closed-in shoes and old clothes
  • Students should bring an apron or smock to protect clothing
  • Students should bring rubber gloves and rags for clean up

Other information

  • All printing materials are water-based and non-toxic
  • Bring lunch/snacks - as it is a full day course
  • Please wear closed-in shoes

Rozelle Campus

Corner of Gordon St & Victoria Rd, Rozelle (in the grounds of St. Joseph's Church). If driving, no entry into Gordon Street from Victoria Road. Last block on your right before Victoria Road. Pedestrian access is opposite Prince Street.
