Sydney Street Photography is a practical photography course that enables student’s the opportunity to apply street style skill sets out in the field. The aim is for students to be given theoretical and practical groundwork to put the diversity of street photography styles into practice with guidance and review. The course content includes street shooting – the techniques and styles of images; on how to take photos on the street, what to look for, and how to take photos of strangers. This is a hands-on course with time spent shooting on the street and a specific street challenge to execute. Reasonable camera skills are required for this course and any camera is ok to use.

If you are brand new to photography, perhaps a camera skills course would be best to start with before enrolling but is not essential if you are confident you have a reasonable grasp of the basics, if unsure please contact us and we can make an assessment.

By the end of this workshop you will:

  • Have hands-on street shooting practice
  • Be able to shoot street photography images
  • Be able to perform a range of styles of street shooting
  • Apply a range of street photography camera techniques
  • Be able to recognise genres of street images
  • Shoot different genres of street photography
  • Know and apply street photography protocols and behaviours
  • Understand the requirement for permissions in street photography
  • Understand the laws and regulations applicable to street photography
  • Experiment with different camera techniques

Course content

During this workshop, the intention is that the following topics can be covered, but not necessarily all of them or in the order given. Due to the variable nature of Adult Education classes, parts of the curriculum may be adapted to suit the needs of the class.

*Session 1: Newtown – Streetlife, graffiti, place and story, candid people shots. Meet at 10:00 am outside entrance to Newtown train station, at the café.
*Session 2: Sydney CBD – Cityscapes, people & place, action and entertainment. Meet at 10:00 am the Metro St James café (outside around the corner from St James Station entrance) in Elizabeth St, close to the Archibald Fountain, Hyde Park, CBD.
*Session 3: Barangaroo – A clash of culture – old and modern architecture, sense of place and geometric space, history and functionality.  Meet at 10:00 am Jet Bar Caffe, QVB, corner of York and Druitt streets, CBD.
