Course description

Yoga class for beginners in Sydney.

Learn Hatha Vinyasa yoga in this eight week in-depth course specifically designed for those new to yoga or those simply wishing to gain a better understanding of their practice.

Great for increasing flexibility, improving breathing, relieving stress, calming the mind, improving your sleep and toning and strengthening your body.

Your body will open up in ways it never has and you will learn a lot about yourself as you try things you haven’t done before.

Small group classes allow individualised attention from the tutor. Each session is 1.5 hours long allowing time to practice the postures.

The course covers the Hatha Vinyasa flow of sequencing of yoga postures, yogic breathing techniques, connection between body movement and breathing, meditation and deep relaxation.

If you’ve previously completed the Yoga for Beginners course at Sydney Community College or equivalent, you can join this course to progress to an intermediate level.

Classes will be structured so that you will gain the skills to start a personal practice or be challenged and continue gaining a deeper understanding of your exisiting practice.

Course content

Week 1 – the pillars of yoga

  • The benefits of yoga and ongoing practice
  • Learn to recognise existing injuries and work within your body’s individual limitations
  • Introduction to yoga breathing techniques and how to adapt them into daily life
  • The ultimate shoulder sequence

Weeks 2-3 – yoga for leg strength and restoring balance (Sun salutations and Warrior series)

  • Understand the role your bones play in yoga and how to engage the right muscles at the right time
  • Sun salutes and binding twists
  • Learn Warrior series and Vinyasa ‘flow’ for courage – learn specific series of movements that are frequently done between each pose/asana

Weeks 4-7 – balancing poses, triangle series, abdominals and meditation

  • Become more centred and grounded and move into one-legged poses
  • Discover the power of backward bending, learn how to maintain a wonderful posture and discover just how great you can feel
  • Build your core strength and take it to the edge
  • Deepen your understanding of meditation

Week 8 – hips, forward bends and restorative yoga

  • Deep release for the hips, lower back and hamstrings
  • Restorative yoga: letting go through stillness and stretch
  • Yoga nidra – meditation continued
  • How to practice at home
Outcomes

At the end of this Yoga for Beginners Class students will:

  • recognise and be able to do basic to intermediate Vinyasa yoga postures and breathing techniques
  • be able to adapt their yoga technique within the limitations of their body and any injuries
  • know how to incorporate yoga into their daily life
  • feel more energized and flexible
  • have a deeper concentration and healthier mind and body
Please bring to class
  • Wear comfortable clothing – yoga is practiced barefoot, please wear fitted, stretchy, pants and Tshirt (loose clothes can get in the way!)
  • Bottle of drinking water
  • Towel
  • A small blanket for relaxation
  • Your own yoga mat. You can buy them online: Cheap option
