Course description

Learn how to grow an organic and eco friendly garden in Sydney.

You know what they say: gardeners get the dirt on everything. Try this course for the low-down on gardening the natural way!

Whether you have a large backyard or small inner city balcony, discover the rewards of working with nature to create a vibrant healthy garden. With a mix of theory and practical classes, you’ll learn techniques for organic growing – with some simple practical ideas you can put to use straight away.

Course content
  • Basic botany: exploring plant characteristics, plant selection, identifying plants
  • Sourcing plants: seed saving and raising, cuttings, division
  • Soil improvement: composting, worm farms, fertilising using natural methods
  • Demonstration of how to build a worm farm and compost
  • Constructing a no-dig garden
  • Pest and disease identification using Integrated Pest Management (IPM)
  • Some garden maintenance basics
Learning outcomes

By the end of this course, you will have learned how to:

  • recognise and describe the advantages of gardening organically
  • identify and evaluate the requirements of healthy soil and discuss how water can be conserved in a garden
  • explain why adequate plant selection is important to a successful organic garden
  • understand the principles and strategies of natural pest control

About the tutor

Emma Daniell is the horticulturist and landscape designer behind Natural Touch Landscapes, which specialises in edible and native gardens. She is also involved in community gardening, having designed and helped create the Randwick Community Organic Garden, where she runs regular workshops. Emma has also facilitated sustainability workshops with local councils across Sydney.
