Life is busy. Work, family, commitments. Sometimes our health slips down our list of priorities or even slips right off the list. You may not have done any exercise in a long time and the thought of joining a noisy, crowded gym scares you. Fit people in lycra are intimidating. This course is specifically designed for people who have limited or no experience in a gym. The course will be held in a small personal training studio at Balmain Sports Medicine, Rozelle. Using simple movements, we show you how to use your own body weight and basic equipment to increase your strength, lose body fat, tone muscle and improve your health. Small groups ensure you receive individual attention and learn the correct technique.

The benefits of strength training include:

  • Maintenance of or increase of muscle mass;

Held over 5 weeks, this mainly practical course provides an introduction to strength training for beginners, and those with limited experience in the gym. You will also learn some simple exercises to improve your cardiovascular fitness, and stretches to improve your flexibility.

Ages 18-80 welcome.

Course content

  • Week 1. Legs (squat, lunge, hamstring curls, calf raise);
  • Week 2. Core (different types of crunches, twists and isometric holds);
  • Week 3. Pulling exercises (e.g. pushups and chest press);
  • Week 4. Pushing exercises (e.g. rows and pulldowns);
  • Week 5. Revision, stretching, and how to design an exercise program.

Please bring to class

  • comfortable clothes and footwear suitable for exercise
  • a towel and water bottle
