  • Use Lectra Modaris and Diamino software effectively to create three styles from basic blocks
  • Create a technical production sheet using MS Excel
  • Create costing markers on Diamino
  • Use grading on Lectra
  • Digitise a pattern into the system, create a model, grade and retrieve it
  • Modify and create basic patterns from existing styles

Course content

What will be covered in this digital pattern making course?

Day 1: File Management, Digitising, Creating a model

  • Learn how to name, save and organise files for safe and easy storage.
  • Learn how to back up, retrieve and store files for security and efficiency of data and system management.
  • Learn how to prepare your patterns to be entered into the computer.
  • Learn how to enter your patterns with precision and apply grading rules at the same time.
  • Learn how to group pieces into one garment model and share patterns between styles.
  • Learn how to make new garments from existing ones without re-entering them.

Day 2: Pattern grading in “Modaris”, the Lectra pattern making software

  • Learn how to grade patterns with any size range and even or uneven grading.
  • Creating, modifying and applying grade rules:
  • Learn how to create rules in tables for repeated use, in all possible variations.
  • Learn how to create new rules by modifying existing ones.
  • Learn the multiple techniques of applying these rules.

Day 3: Pattern modification and alterations in Modaris

  • Learn how to modify your patterns on screen so there is no need to re-digitise.
  • Learn how to make alterations at any stage of the garments’ creation process.
  • Learn the techniques and shortcuts to save time and increase accuracy.

Day 4: Pattern making in Modaris

  • Learn the techniques of cutting, slashing and reshaping patterns to make new ones.
  • Learn basic construction of a pattern on screen from scratch.
  • Learn the many pattern making tools and help menu to support the process. 

Day 5: Marker Making in “Diamino”, the Lectra Marker making software:

  • Learn how to create a marker for sampling or production.
  • Creating, modifying and manipulating markers:
  • Learn how to enter all of the parameters for each garment and size break up.
  • Learn how to use the tools in the software to utilise your fabric in the most efficient way.
  • Printing in “JustPrint” the Lectra printing software.
  • Learn how to print patterns, grades, markers in full scale and PDF for record-keeping.
  • Learn how to print out rules and specifications for your records.

Day 6: Assessment and overview

  • Assessment and overview of the whole process to validate your understanding and level of competency.
  • Repeat the process from start to finish and ensure your notes contain all the information required for you to work independently in a commercial setting.
  • Do an assessment that will help you to consolidate everything you have learnt in the course.

Who is this digital pattern making course is for?

This course is for anyone with a desire to learn the fundamentals of Lectra's CAD system. Students should have a strong interest in fashion design, be eager to learn how to draft patterns to design their own clothes, and want to expand their knowledge of pattern making and garment construction.

Please note: It is expected that students who enrol in this course need to have a practical understanding of traditional pattern making and be able to use a computer in a Windows operating environment.

This Photoshop course runs in our computer lab, fitted with 27-inch Apple iMac systems as well as Dell computers running the Windows operating system. Adobe products function in the same way on both Windows and Macintosh computers except for minor differences with keyboard usage and where files are located within the computer.
