Learning outcomes
It is intended that by the end of this course you should be able to apply:
- letters and numerals of the copperplate hand
- spacial awareness
- analytical skills for letter form and shape
- an understanding of layout and design skills
- colour and design techniques
- all learned skills to a piece of work or project.

Ideal for
All levels are welcome from beginners to those who want to brush up on their skills.
Course content
In this course, you will study:
- how to write with a pointed pen
- the script, its style, letter construction and characteristics
- letter form, spacing and joining of letters
- capitals and their origins and combine them with the lower case letters
- flourishing
- numerals
- colour, layout and design skills with the idea of combining all of the above to produce a small piece of work
Please bring to class
You may choose to bring your own materials or purchase a kit from your tutor in class.
If you wish to purchase a kit please bring $35 cash (not included in the course fee), as well as:
- Ruler
- Water jar
- Pencil
If you wish to bring your own materials, please bring the following:
- A4 or A3 bond layout pad (Canson or similar brand from art stores)
- Chisel shaped nibs – small, medium and large size (such as Brause, Speedball C NIBS, William Mitchell)
- Pen holder
- Ink (Black Sumi ink or Chinese stick ink)
- Gouache (black & a primary colour set)
- Ruler, HB pencil
- Water jar, rag
- Other supplies will be advised if needed throughout the course

- Closed-in shoes required
- Please wear old clothes
- Long hair must be tied back
