Ceramics: Glazing & Firing for Beginners

View Classes

Learn to glaze and fire with our pottery courses in Sydney.

Clay comes alive with colour and surface applications. Glazing can be the magic that completes your unique artwork!

This hands-on course teaches techniques and glazing options open to those who want to take their ceramic objects to another level.

Whilst firing is not an exact science this course will explore the alchemy of heat, clay and glaze finding outcomes around a desired surface, effect or colourway. Using straightforward techniques matt and shiny, heavily textured as well as subtle and mysterious, an amazing variety of surfaces can be achieved with commercial glazes and available oxides.

Course outcomes

By the end of this course you will:

  • have a basic knowledge of glaze materials and their properties
  • be able to apply glazes and oxides with confidence
  • be able to predict within a certain range the outcomes of commercial glazes and have empirical knowledge of how to manipulate them to extend the range of surface and colour
  • have learned how to safely handle and store ceramic ware
  • go home with your beautifully glazed artwork

Ideal for

  • Students with some experience of clay and firing. If you are an absolute beginner you might wish to attend one of our sculpture courses first
  • Students who have done this course before and wish to continue practising and improving their glazing skills

We will discuss individual glazes you may want to bring to subsequent classes.
