Course description

Learn how to glaze with acrylic in Sydney.

Glazing is a traditional technique employed by all painters.

Acrylics have unique properties and glazing with this medium can offer the painter much more.

This workshop goes past transparency, embraces the opaque and looks at the possibilities of enriching the painted surface.

The participants in this workshop not only will increase their knowledge of acrylic paint, but also will gain understanding of acrylic mediums, colour control and composition, improve their painting techniques and take home references for future work.

The aim of this workshop is to increase the skills of participants and to have number of colour sketches for future work.

Learning outcomes

At the end of this workshop you have

  • worked with acrylic mediums
  • knowledge about colour mixing and control
  • praciticed a variety of glazing techniques
Please come prepared
  • Glazing medium (same brand as pigment brand)
  • Pigments (ask for Artist Quality): 3 x transparent colour of your choice + 3 x opaque colours (1 x titanium white, 1 x yellow ochre, 1 x colour of your choice)
  • Glazing brushes: 2 x Synthetic & Flat (1" Renoir Wideflow 8010 + 1.5" Renoir Wideflow 8015 or simiar) and Number 3 for each colour if possible.
  • 1 x Waterproof containers with lid for each pigment colour (small but large enough to fit brushes)
  • Cheap bristle brushes for mixing
  • Surface: 5 x A3 (A4 min) Canvas Sheets OR Rolls of canvas cut up (Not Canvas paper) OR Canvas boards
  • Hairdryer
  • Palette: Plastice plates are ok
  • Brush cleaner or sunlight soap
  • Kitchen towel/tissues
  • Masking tape
  • Drawing paper, lead pencils, eraser, small ruler
  • A “failed painting” (optional)

  • Lunch can be purchased on Darling Street (10 min. walk) or
  • Bring your own lunch (Fridge and Microwave available)
  • Closed-in shoes required
  • Please wear old clothes
  • Long hair must be tied back
