Course description

A follow-up course to Digital Print Design, for anyone who has the hang of the basics of digital print design and regular users of Adobe Photoshop.

This class is created to improve your skills in digital textile design with a focus on industry trends. Over two weeks you will learn advanced skills in creating professional-level designs in response to a design brief of your choice. You will learn how to format a photoshop document for commercial purposes as well as for print. Over these sessions you’ll be working alongside a professional textile designer, to create a professional level textile design using a combination of hand and digital illustration techniques.

*please note- the course cost does not include any fabric printing, but will guide you on how to place your own orders.

Course content

  • A follow up to our Digital Print design course
  • Learn advanced Photoshop techniques
  • Working from a professional brief with on-trend designs
  • Using colour palettes/ colour-separation
  • Understanding the print process
  • Learn about the printing stages: strike-offs, colour-matching, sampling and production
  • Create a design from a professional brief of your choosing in: fashion, swimwear, activewear, upholstery/homewares, kidswear


  • By the end of this course you will be able to:
  • Create a professional layered textile artwork at industry standard in response to a brief
  • Understand multiple ways to structure a repeat tile
  • Learn how to develop a style
  • Create designs for fabric ‘headers’ for a printable portfolio
  • Improve your understanding of colour palettes, base-cloths and their applications for fabric design
  • Learn how to place orders with different printers and better understand the process

*Please note that this course is an advanced follow-up to Digital Print Design. It is recommended to have completed this course before applying.
A working level of Adobe photoshop and Mac computers is required to take this course.

Please Bring to Each Class

  • Notepad and paper or a tablet
  • 1-5 Illustrations you have made at home (drawn with ink, pen, pencil, watercolour, gouache, etc) - for scanning
  • A hard drive
  • Feel free to BYO laptop with Adobe Creative Cloud with Illustrator and Photoshop already downloaded to use in class. It might be easier to work on your project on your own laptop, to take home, rather than downloading large files on/ off the computers in class. But we do have 12 big Mac computers with Adobe CC on all for you to use.
