Learn Chinese brush painting with our painting courses in Sydney!
Join this hands-on workshop to learn techniques used in traditional Chinese brush painting, combining ink with watercolours.
While exploring traditional Chinese painting techniques, you’ll create your own artwork to take home. You’ll also discover the relaxing and reflective nature of this traditional art form.
Each workshop will reflect the season, with subjects relating to either birds, flowers or landscape compositions.
Learning outcomes
By the end of this chinese brush painting workshop, beginners will:
- have learned some history of Chinese brush painting
- understand the characteristics of Chinese paintbrushes
- have learned new drawing and painting skills
- understand how to appreciate structure in your own work
More experienced students will also:
- have further developed their drawing and painting skills
- be able to appreciate artworks made by the masters

- The general meaning behind the “four treasures” of Chinese brush painting
- Different Chinese paintbrushes and when to use them
- Applying a variety of Sumi lines
- Mixing tonal graduations
Who is this Chinese brush painting workshop for?
This workshop is suitable for beginners, as well as students with more experience who want to extend their practice and gain new skills. New students will learn basic Chinese brush painting techniques. Experienced students will integrate their own techniques with Sumi painting into lively compositions
Course venue
2A Gordon Street, Rozelle NSW 2039 (corner of Gordon St & Victoria Rd in the grounds of St. Joseph's Church)
If driving, there is no entry into Gordon Street from Victoria Road. Last block on your right before Victoria Road. Pedestrian access is opposite Prince Street.
What to bring to class
- A notebook & pen if you want to take notes
- Closed-in shoes
- Clothes you don’t mind getting paint on (or an apron)
- Long hair must be tied back
Brushes provided, but if you wish to use your own, bring 1 × 12-15" line brush (brown hair), 1 × colour brush (white hair) and 1 × smaller line brush (brown) and a square Hake brush (white hair).
Ink, paints and rice paper provided.
