Course description

Learn hand stitching in Sydney with this sewing class.

The soul is fed by needle and thread.

Take time out for yourself to explore the meditative and healing qualities of hand stitching. Work with artist and designer Lorna Murray and learn how to draw with stitch. Indulge in the joy and beauty of embroidery while drinking tea from cups and saucers.

This workshop is an opportunity to connect with yourself and a space to enjoy the company of others who share a love for stitching.
Each lesson we will be able to slow down, work in stillness and celebrate the act of making. The final outcome may vary depending upon your intention.
You may wish to create a very personal cloth purse, a needle pouch, a textile doll, a series of small talismans, a sampler or other cloth panel.

Course content
  • Learning new hand-stitching techniques and the art of mindfulness while making
  • Learning basic practical skills such as: sewing a button, sewing a hem, mending
  • Completing your stitched panel and creating a very personal item, such as a cloth purse, a needle pouch, a textile doll, a series of small talismans, a sampler or other cloth panel
Please bring to class
  • Various size (hand) sewing needles
  • Various coloured embroidery threads, woolen threads, crochet threads and machine threads
  • Scissors
  • Unpicker
  • Various natural fibre fabric pieces (roughly A3 size) (plain and printed) ... (Consider aesthetics by selecting your fabrics carefully. Think about the sorts of colours, patterns, weights and textures that you wish to work with. Examples of natural fibre fabrics are: linen, cotton, silk, wool, rayon). You could even bring in garments you wish to sew onto – such as a shirt or skirt!
  • 1 x metre cotton cloth to be used as your backing cloth
  • Large embroidery hoop
  • Cup and saucer for drinking tea
Outcomes

By the end of this course you will have:

  • learnt some beautiful hand stitching techniques
  • crafted a beautiful piece of their own
  • learnt the art of slow stitch as a form of mindfulness and relaxation
About your tutor

Lorna Murray is a leading Australian textile artist with a vibrant creative practice spanning the past 20 years.

Her passion for textiles is infectious. Her work energetically traverses art, fashion and design disciplines. She exhibits in galleries nationally and internationally and also launches a range of limited edition women’s apparel during spring and summer each year.

Lorna’s other great passion is being an educator in the fields of textiles, fashion and art. She runs workshops, teaches art in schools and lectures at university.
Through relaxed and enjoyable workshops Lorna shares her extensive knowledge and practical skills among her students.

  • All our sewing courses are limited to 12 places (10 places in the city venue), which enables the tutor to give each student plenty of one-to-one guidance and instruction
