Learn to make a hat with our millinery courses in Sydney.
Take your millinery skills to next level! A follow up to our beginners course, in this class you will have the opportunity to learn some new techniques to create your own headpieces, fascinators, and cocktail pieces. You will complete one or two headpiece or fascinator projects to take your millinery techniques to a new level.
Course outcomes
By the end of this course, students will have:
- Completed one or more headpieces in the workshops using one or more of the demonstrated techniques.
- Made a cocktail or fascinator headpiece base using Buckram or Fosshape.
- Learned to use covering with fabrics such as silk, and lace.
- Made a wire foundation headpiece or headband.
- Made millinery flowers using leather, silk, or sinamay.
- Made turbands.
- Made bows from different materials.
All basic and foundation materials for this course are supplied in a kit.
Specific millinery tools, hat blocks, glues, and stiffeners are also supplied by the tutor for use in the class.
Course content
The following topics will be covered and demonstrated during the course – It is desirable to have completed the Introduction to Millinery Workshop or to have had some previous millinery experience.
- Tools for millinery
- Safety
- Foundation Basics- Wire, Buckram, and Fosshape
- Techniques to use silk and lace to cover the foundation
- Flowers for Millinery with Leather, Silk, and Organdie
- Sinamay Trims and Bows
- Crinoline tips and techniques for Turbands and millinery bows

It is useful to bring a sewing kit including:
- Mixed Pack Straw Needles
- Pack of Pins
- Wooden Pegs
- Marking chalk
- Measuring Tape
- Small Ruler
- Beeswax thread conditioner
- Sewing Gauge
- Sewing pins
You will also need the following equipment:
- All-purpose Scissors
- Dressmaking scissors
- Mapping or push Pins for Blocking
- Long Nosed Pliers
- Thimble
- Apron
- Matching Sewing Thread
- Hat Box
Further materials may need to be purchased to complete your design – such as feathers, and flower making materials.
