Create a fascinator or headpiece for your next Raceday or Special occasion!
In this 4 week course you will make and take home a hat or headpiece home that you have created. Check in the FYI below to see which Extension technique and material will be the focus of this class. Some experience with design, sewing, and millinery will be useful for this class. This Millinery Extension course focuses on developing your millinery skills using Foundation materials – leno, or fosshape to create a pillbox, bandeau, turban, or cocktail piece, with a matching hand-tooled silk flower, or Wire to create a mini Top hat, or Tiara with a Grosgrain Cockade to trim.
In this class you will have the opportunity to extend and update your millinery skills. You will work on a headpiece or fascinator project to take your millinery techniques to a new level.
Take your millinery skills to next level! A follow up to our Millinery Course for Beginners, in this class you will have the opportunity to learn some new techniques to create your own headpieces, fascinators, and cocktail pieces. You will complete one or two headpiece or fascinator projects to take your millinery techniques to a new level.
Learning outcomes
Students will have completed one or more headpieces in the workshops using one or a combination of the following techniques:
- made a cocktail or fascinator headpiece base using Buckram or Fosshape.
- learned to use covering with fabrics such as silk, and lace.
- made a wire foundation headpiece or headband.
- made millinery flowers using leather, silk, or sinamay.
- made turbands.
- made bows from different materials.
All basic and foundation materials for this course are supplied in a kit.
Specific millinery tools, hat blocks, glues, and stiffeners are also supplied by the tutor for use in the class.

The following topics will be covered and demonstrated during the course
- Millinery Tools, and Equipment
- Safety rules in millinery making
- Foundation Basics- Wire, or Buckram, and Fosshape.
- Techniques to use silk and lace to cover the foundation.
- Make a Silk Flower or Grosgrain Cockade or Bow
- Which hats suit me
- Care for your hat and headpiece
Who is this Millinery course for?
Students who have completed Millinery Course for Beginners or who have previous experience in Millinery.
What to bring to class
It is useful to bring a sewing kit including:
- Mixed Pack Straw Needles
- Pack of Pins
- Wooden Pegs
- Marking chalk
- Measuring Tape
- Small Ruler
- Beeswax thread conditioner
- Sewing Gauge
- Sewing pins
You will also need the following equipment:
- All-purpose Scissors
- Dressmaking scissors
- Mapping or push Pins for Blocking
- Long-nosed Pliers
- Thimble
- Apron
- Matching Sewing Thread
- Hat Box
Further materials may need to be purchased to complete your design - such as feathers, and flower making materials.
